Interview with Stephanie Dunham

annejhillediting

Stephanie is the author of two nonfiction poetry collections, four speculative poetry books, and the YA book, Traitors & Tyrants. She loves to watch reruns of The Office and Gilmore Girls when time allows, but most of her days are spent keeping her child alive. One of her favorite series of all time is The Lord of the Rings, but she loves to experiment with reading and writing other genres.

Do you have anything published?

Yes! I have four speculative poetry books, two nonfiction poetry collections, and a young adult high fantasy novel, Traitors & Tyrants.

Can you briefly summarize what you have published?

The Siren Walking poetry series is a tale of a siren’s loss and revenge. The Kraken’s Hunt retells the origins of the kraken, who he was before the monster, why he became a monster, and what happens to him later. Everything is Okay is a nonfiction poetry collection about depression and anxiety and finding hope to hold on to during that experience. Worlds of Wonder is a short collection about the joys of motherhood. And lastly, Traitors & Tyrants is about a young prince trying to save his kingdom and an enchantress who has been imprisoned by her mother her entire life.

Is there any personal backstory to your publication(s) that you want to share about?

A little known fact about Traitors & Tyrants is that it was originally supposed to be a retelling of Rapunzel.

What first got you into writing?

To be quite honest, I don’t remember. I just know that one day twelve-year-old me decided that she was going to write a book, and I ended up loving the process. So I participated in NaNoWriMo and completed my first book, which led me to finally completing twelve-year-old me’s book.

What is your favorite genre to write?

Hands down, my answer has to be fantasy. I love the freedom and possibility. Plus, I get to do whatever I want. *winks*

What is your favorite genre to read?

Believe it or not, this is kind of a hard one to answer. I’ve really started enjoying mystery/thrillers in the last few years, but I think I’m going to have to say fantasy is still my favorite genre.

What do you enjoy doing other than writing?

I’ve always enjoyed playing the piano when I have one available to me, but I’m finding that baking bread is becoming more and more enjoyable. To be honest, though, my main hobby has always been reading.

What upcoming projects do you have?

Right now, I’m working on Monsters & Rebels, the sequel to Traitors & Tyrants, and even though I’m still in the editing stages, I must admit that I am so proud of the book. I think it’s definitely better than the first one already, and I am stoked to give you guys the final product when it’s ready!

I’ve also just started work on a novel adaptation of The Kraken’s Hunt on the side, and I’m excited to tell you guys more about it once I’m further into the project!

What's your least favorite trope?

None of the fantasy tropes really bother me, but I’ve never had much luck with second-chance romance. I’ve read a couple, and neither did anything for me.

If you could be any plant, what would it be, and why?

A plant? I’ve never considered this. Probably grass. Give me some halfway-decent soil, and I do what I can to make the best of it.

If you could give any author or poet one tip, what would it be?

Discipline and consistency. There are a million different writing styles for you to adopt and a thousand ways to plot, outline, etc. You could write 100 words a day or 5,000, but you won’t get much of anywhere without discipline and consistency. Take a hard look at your life and what you personally are capable of, and set your goals accordingly. Don’t look at the five people next to you and think more or less of yourself based off their performance.

Anything else you want to share about yourself?

I also write sci-fi/horror books under the pen name Chris Corly, so if that’s your jam, you can check out my book, Well of Terror!

Where can people find out more information about you?

You can find me on TikTok, Instagram, and Threads as @authorstephaniedunham. I’m most active on Instagram and Threads, so if you want to come chat with me, those are my go-to places!
